2024 CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS) is now accepting research abstracts for the 2024 State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research.
Conference Dates and Location
June 13 – 15, 2024: Grand Hyatt Washington, DC
The State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research convenes nurse scientists from across the country in our nation’s capital to explore pressing and timely research issues. This event advances CANS’ goal of Better Health Through Nursing Science and challenges participants to think boldly about how to strengthen their own work toward this endeavor. The 2024 State of the Science offers attendees first-hand access to cutting-edge presentations led by diverse panels of speakers, the chance to connect with staff from federal research agencies, opportunities to present and view poster and podium presentations, network with colleagues, and be inspired by the impact of nursing science on the health of communities. This year’s conference aligns with the American Academy of Nursing’s theme of “Envision” during its 50th anniversary, and is centered on envisioning the future of nursing science. Key areas of interest include emergent topics such as artificial intelligence and social determinants of health, adaptive science on enduring health problems, and novel strategies to scale-up nurse-led solutions. We invite participants to share contributions on a national platform that will shape and inform the future of nursing science.
General Information for Submitting Abstracts
The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science is now accepting abstracts for podium and poster presentations at the 2024 State of the Science Congress. Abstracts should clearly specify how the work contributes to the current state of nursing science. Submitted abstracts should include new, unpublished information that, at the time of submission, has not been presented at any level. If referencing previously published information, please indicate what information is novel.
Authors may submit multiple abstracts, and we ask that you note the topic of each abstract during the submission process. Abstracts for research in progress may be submitted for poster presentation only. Student submissions are encouraged and abstracts reporting literature reviews, systematic reviews, and/or conceptual frameworks related to the conference theme will be considered.
The abstract submission website will open on January 12, 2024. You may edit your abstract through February 16, 2024. After February 16, at 11:59 pm ET, your abstract is considered final and will be reviewed based on the content provided.
There is a one-time, non-refundable fee of $85 per abstract submitted. There is no additional presentation fee if your abstract(s) is accepted. You will also be required to register for the conference in order to present your abstract(s).
Abstracts will be selected as either podium or poster presentations. Podium presenters will have approximately 12-15 minutes for presentation (may vary depending on session). Final presentation instructions will be sent at the time that decision notifications are sent (early April). Posters will be displayed at a scheduled time during the conference, during which time you will be able to present your poster and engage in discussion and Q&A with attendees.
Your Abstract Should Include the Following Components
Title: A brief statement of the nature of the investigation or purpose of the project.
Author: Presenting author information.
Aims: The overall purpose or objective, question, or study hypothesis.
Methods: Describe the study or project design and methods (sample, procedures, measures, and/or data analysis). Please note that the study can use qualitative or quantitative methods.
Results: Discussion of research findings and products (research in progress should note “research in progress”).
Conclusions: Describe the overall impact and findings of the study, and, if applicable, note any relevance to health equity, social determinants of health, and emerging topics shaping the future of science and healthcare. Research in progress should note “research in progress.”
The body of the abstract (aims through conclusions) is limited to 250 words in total. As part of the online submission process, presenters will be asked to select the content area(s) that best reflect their submission. Authors will also be asked to indicate their presentation preference (podium, poster, or either).
Would You Like to Propose a Symposium?
If you would like to propose a symposium, one person from the group will serve as the lead. When beginning the online submission, please select the “Symposium” option from the drop-down box, and then follow the instructions for submitting individual abstracts within the symposium.
General Guidelines for Symposium Proposals
1. The State of the Science Conference will accept symposium proposals during this same time period (January 12, 2024 – February 16, 2024).
2. To be considered, the symposium proposal must include between 4 and 6 abstracts on a similar topic.
3. The lead for the symposium will create an overview for the submission.
4. The lead will then add members of the group as collaborators, who will then add their own abstracts to the submission following instructions and a task list from the submission site. Please note that the $85 submission fee is required for each abstract.
5. The lead will be required to submit the final submission once the collaborators have added their submissions.
6. If the proposed symposium is not accepted, then each of the research-based abstracts will automatically be considered for individual presentation.
Review and Selection
The 2024 Abstract Review Committee will determine the final selection of abstracts (poster, podium, and symposia) based on scores and recommendations from peer reviewers.
The online abstract submission process ends at 11:59 PM ET on February 16, 2024. The review process will begin in February and announcements are scheduled to take place in early April.
